How Honda’s Civic Campaign Showcased the Power of Real-Time Filmmaking
When Honda aimed to release a series of Civic commercials on social media, they collaborated with Nexodus to realize their vision. Nexodus, in turn, enlisted playard studios to manage pre-visualization. With only two weeks for delivery, we utilized our real-time filmmaking pipeline to develop an efficient, high-quality blueprint for the entire shoot.
More Than Just Previz
Right from the beginning, we approached this project as something beyond standard previz. Using Unreal Engine, we digitally constructed, illuminated, and animated the locations, along with creating a digital replica of the car and actors. This enabled us to accurately simulate shots, lighting, and camera movements through interactive sessions with the director in real time.
We not only planned the action but also crafted the creative language of the piece. We considered factors such as camera height, lens selection, crane arm clearance, interaction with the environment, as well as timing the actor's lines to align with specific cues, and VFX markers and transitions. This resulted in a practical plan for executing shots confidently and ensuring smoother post-production.
From Engine to Set
Our delivery exceeded the scope of previs. The final package featured an edit that accounted for the spot's looping nature and the timing of the actor's lines and interactions. This enabled the production team to make crucial decisions prior to filming. Gear placement, talent blocking, and visual effects planning were all resolved in advance, minimizing uncertainty and streamlining the entire shoot.
On set, our previz acted as a frame-by-frame guide. Each department clearly understood what was expected, enabling the director to concentrate on performance and creativity instead of resolving technical logistical issues.

This project demonstrated that top-notch previz is not exclusive to big-budget blockbusters. It serves as a valuable tool for any production aiming to save time, minimize risk, and enhance the final outcome.
